The Senate majority leader’s remarks were met with silence by other speakers of the gathering, including Pence, who did not speak. Pence has previously argued that the Chamber of Commerce is the biggest trade and industry lobby group in Washington and a major source of influence in Congress.
And CAP Action’s Ryan Bunch said in a statement Friday that the group’s focus on “the most powerful interests in Washington and the American business community” does not align with the GOP.
“It’s ironic that the Chamber’s anti-trade agenda makes some Wall Streeters wealthy while the American public suffers in their wake, thanks to our broken free enterprise system,” Bunch said.
“We applaud Senator Reid’s words and wish Senator Ryan his well as he moves forward in the effort to rebuild our economy.”
He added, “The Chamber needs to be careful how it distorts our economy, especially when it comes to trade,” adding that the Chamber is also trying to undermine environmental and labor protections with claims that “the vast majority of American jobs, which aren’t being lost, actually exist on the other side of the world.”
Other speakers at the dinner, hosted by the Center for American Progress Action Fund and held in Washington, include former White House chief of staff Reince Priebus; former 더킹카지노House Speaker Newt Gingrich; and former Sen. Russ Feingold (D-Wis.).
