Thousands of police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse angry crowds on Wednesday and Thursday, after weeks of demonstrations calling for an end to government harassment of pro-democracy activists.
An Amnesty International study on the government’s treatment of the activists in recent years says that in all, 12 had their constitutional rights violated.
Protesters have accused the government of ignoring and persecuting them because they protested in support of a proposed new constitution, or “one man, one vote.”
